plain or uncomplicated in form or design

Often a building or garden design lies in its simplicity, straightforwardness, and absence of adornment. the uncomplicated elements of this design allow the architecture to form the stage for nature to impress upon us its grandeur and beauty. The uncluttered nature of this design impresses upon us the sense of bold sophistication, allowing the elements to narrate for themselves.

feeling ‘boxed’

Plant boxes are great way to give those small awkward entertainment areas a face lift, use recycled wood for tree planters or herb boxes. I really like these recycled crates used as a bookshelf, why not make a feature of this on an outside wall as ‘potplantshelf’

Flavour of change

Its amazing that we can ‘vote” IN FAVOUR OF CHANGE by simply deciding what products to buy or where to eat.
On my recent quest for restaurants that have their own vegetable gardens I was steered in the direction of SPIER http://www.spier.co.za in Stellenbosch. Thier “farm-to-table eating concept” is inspiring. Here, Angus the farmer offers the consumer ethically produced meat and vegetables, using biodynamic agricultural practices, where cattle, chickens(using “Eggmobiles”, moving coops) and sheep, are raised on pastures contributing to the fertility of the soil. Restaurants with vegetable gardens.. may there be more

Cost, convenience, control, sustainability….the idea has hit far and wide… or has it?

In the cape, visit Babylonstoren in Franshoek where the owners are bringing together the garden and the kitchen “The gardens one encounters, are inspired by Jan van Riebeck’s Company Gardens in Cape Town. They stretch over eight acres of pure landscaping architecture. One is submersed in botanical heaven, amidst fruit, herbs and all vegetables imaginable. The beautifully designed formal gardens with an elaborate “old skool” irrigation system are a wondrous journey from garden to pallet… read more

Garden on rooftops

I have always wanted a roof garden to stroll out into when I lived in the city…living in the inner city without access to a garden or the heavenly parks of say Stockholm, London or perhaps Central Park in NYC can induce a kind of anxiety known as cabin fever. The need to get out and away from home becomes an obsession. I have often thought about those home bodies conflicted by the desire to stay but needing to get out. These are some of the thoughts I had for a roof garden:
I would lay a grass lawn, although I have recently come across a type of astro turf that is used outside but apparently dogs and birds will not do their stuff on it so pet lovers, grass is perhaps the more natural thing to aim for. I would plant jasmin, sweet peas, poppies, peonies and dahlias together with trellis adorned with berries, some fruit bearing trees in large planters, lemons for the gin and tonic and a herb garden for aroma. The edible and fragrant garden cascading as a backdrop behind your outdoor breakfast table… hmm

pools of time…

Wouldn’t it be fabulisimo to spend time in a pool like this?
I found this reference on tumblr, www.giftsoflife.tumblr.com and wondered who on earth was the avatar with this incredible concept. The design contrasts the natural jungle and the man-made so well that it feels like a pool made by the gods
